Yellow Ostrich
2010 - The Morgan Freeman EP; Fade Cave EP; The Mistress
Genre: Experimental Pop
Label: Cakes and Tapes / Afternoon Records
"Yellow Ostrich is from New York City. It is mostly Alex Schaaf. Michael Tapper plays drums now."
The last.fm description is as simple as informative about the facts, but featureless about closer descriptions about...everything that concerns the music of this band. Probably because it is hard to describe. At least for me. It was kind of hard to find a right genre tag. So it´s always easy to tag something with "experimental", because this can mean everything :-) Perhaps it helps when I say that you might like Yellow Ostrich when you like The Dodos, Grizzly Bear or Animal Collective.
The voice reminds of those a capella singers we know from (old) movies or something, but not in a boring sense. It sounds fresh and interesting, especially when it comes to polyphonic or overlaying vocals.
The first, "Morgan Freeman" EP is a bit more electronic and spacy compared to the upcoming stuff. You can definitely see or here a development in their music, although everything was created within relatively short period (just 3 months).
Full length "The Mistress" is available on name-your-price-base at Bandcamp or as limited vinyl at Afternoon Records.
The both EPs are also available on name-your-price-base at Bandcamp here and here. The "Fade Cave", which I enjoyed most is additionally available as limited edition cassette tape at Cakes and Tapes.
